THE Royal Botanic Gardens is once again transformed into a simply splendid English playground as that perennial favourite, The Wind in the Willows, kicks off its summer season today. Based on Kenneth Grahame's tale of a group of adventurous and occasionally law-breaking animals, the production roams across the gardens, at times with young audience members in hot pursuit.

Unleashed on the world in 1908, the impulsive Toad, obliging Ratty, mild-mannered Mole and wise Mr Badger have lost none of their appeal as they mess about in boats or live it up in Toad Hall.

Pack a picnic and make your way to the edge of the Wild Wood, but beware of weasels along the way. -- LINDY PERCIVAL
