AUSTINMER'S all-conquering surf boat crew "warmed up" with a gold medal performance on the opening day of the Australian surf-lifesaving titles in Perth.
Competing in Wednesday's masters division, Austinmer prevailed in the 120 years (combined ages) final, gapping their nearest rivals by 50m.National open champions in 2003, Austi have been on song throughout summer, capturing their second straight Ocean Thunder title in February.Sweep Jack Patison said Wednesday's win would further boost his crew's confidence in their bid for supremacy in the open men's competition. Elimination races get underway today and finals will be held on Sunday."It's not often you get the opportunity to win two medals at the Aussies (championships) and we've put ourselves in a position to do that," Patison said."It was good to have a solid warm-up and hit-out before Friday and the boys are really looking forward to it."Austinmer's 140 years masters crew finished seventh in their final, while Patison believes the club's under 23 Colts crew are a red-hot chance to emulate last month's victory at the state titles.Meanwhile, Bulli won't be giving up their Australian title without a fight in the men's reserve boats division.Bulli sweep Paul Jones said his crew enjoyed a smooth build-up and are ready to defend their crown."We're looking pretty good. Winning back-to-back gold medals is pretty good motivation," Jones said."The boys are rowing well and, with a bit of luck, we'll give it a good nudge again. A little chop is good, but hopefully it's flat again because it reduces the luck factor and makes it even for everybody."The Australian titles are the final event on the surf lifesaving calender.Aside from the "boaties", Illawarra and South Coast branches will be represented by several beach and water competitors.
